Solar Lights and Chargers

Customer question (received via email 25th April 2021):

Hello, I’m looking for a solar panel to charge the battery on a car transporter trailer with a motor mover (because I struggle to move the trailer manually to fit it on the towbar).  The trailer lives in a campsite secure storage area with no access to mains when I’m not using it, and on campsites when I’ve used it to tow my pre-war car to events.   So I need something that will ensure I have a charged battery when I come to use the trailer - but that won’t over-charge it it.  Can you suggest something suitable?

Hi, I am looking for a solar solution to maintain 110ah leisure battery whilst the caravan is in storage. I dont need high performance for top up whilst the caravan is in use just permanent winter maintenance. The caravan is under cover. We have a South facing Window about 8m from the battery Box. Will the suggested system work through the Window or do we need to mount the panel out side. I prefer a solution to simply click onto the battery in November and be able to leave it until we go back the next spring. I look forward to hearing from you

Hi,
I'm looking for a solution to a problem i have with my A class motorhome, it is equipped with a solar panel to maintain 2 x leisure batteries and 1 x starter battery. I have noted overwinter that the starter battery has flattened and is not recoverable, the leisure batteries are fine and seem to be maintained without issue, i think it may be something to do with the way the battery monitors voltage relay switches, as i understand it takes care of the leisure batteries first and then the starter battery.

My thought is to fit a stand alone solar panel in the windscreen...

Hello,

I'm looking to keep batteries maintained in my T5 camper which gets fairly infrequent use. It has a 110A leisure battery and a cranking battery. I am assuming that solar is the best option. Side windows are tinted.

Best, Jon

Hi Jon,

Many thanks for getting in touch. Your options are:

Option 1 - A solar charger for each battery.

I'd recommend two Optimate 10W solar chargers. Slight problem is we have only one left in stock and do not know when new stock will arrive (Covid has interrupted supply chain...

Hello. I'm looking for a solar power battery charger for my caravan battery.

Hi Stephen,

Many thanks for getting in touch.

I suggest you take a look at the Optimate range of solar chargers for your caravan. They are very easy to use and come with a charge controller to maximise charging and protect the battery from overcharging.

For maintenance charging (protection against natural battery drain when the caravan is in storage), for a typical 110AH 12V leisure battery I would recommend an Optimate 20W solar...

Customer question (received via email 17th June 2020):

Hi, Please can you advise me if you have a solar charger suitable for charging the battery on my tipper trailer, it is left in an open barn with no electricity so would need to be waterproof and also would need to be left unattended for long periods. Many thanks

Willgen Reply (Email from Bill 17th June 2020):

Hi Nick,

Many thanks for getting in touch.

As the battery may be quite depleted after use the Optimate 20 would be well suited to your requirements.

If you need to recharge the battery quickly due to regular use of the tipper battery you may want to use a larger...

Customer question (received via email 13th June 2020):

Which solar panel would be suitable to charge an electric ignition on a sit on lawn mower please?

Kim

Willgen Reply (Email from Bill 15th June 2020):

Hi Kim,

Many thanks for getting in touch.

If you can get the solar panel in a good position (outdoors, South facing, un-shaded) an Optimate 10 will be ideal for a lawn tractor battery. If the solar panel is less than perfect go for a larger Optimate 20. This will ensure that the battery is kept topped up when the tractor is not in use and the battery will always be fully charged ready to start the engine when...

Customer question (received via email 12th June 2020):

Good afternoon.  I have a Land Rover Defender with a twin battery set-up (main and leisure).  Which trickle charger would you recommend please?  Thank you, Nick.

Willgen Reply (Email from Bill 15th June 2020):

Hi Nick,

Many thanks for getting in touch.

Assuming that you want to charge both batteries I would either go for one solar charger and swap it between batteries, two separate solar chargers with one solar charger dedicated to each battery or for a single larger solar panel wired back to a dual battery charge controller.

Single Solar Charger

I highly...
